Ronan E. O’Malley, M.D., FACS


Dr. Ronan O’Malley was born in Galway, Ireland. He graduated from Glenstal Abbey School, where he excelled on the rugby team. He graduated with honors from the National University of Galway, Ireland. He became Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at Bristol Eye Hospital, England. His fellowship was in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He served as president of the Houston Ophthalmological Society, Southern Retina Group in Houston, and on the Board of Directors of the Doctors Club in Houston. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.

His clinical and research interests include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and pediatric retina. He pioneered closed posterior vitrectomy for premature infants and partook in the recent ground-breaking Avastin for Retinopathy of Prematurity study. He has written and presented papers for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ocular Surgery News and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. O’Malley speaks Gaelic and Swedish and is an avid birdwatcher and nature photographer.
